exhibiting in Women by Women, the 10th edition of the @photovogue Festival, @voguemagazine held at the prestigious Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, Milan.
Selected among 150 artists from nearly 100,000 submissions worldwide, the exhibition explores what it means to tengok menegok as a woman, (see and and be seen as a woman).
Grateful to work in some of the projects with friends, shout out to @highkeyflair @aidan.at @whoisshiyan who contributed in collaboration. Iโve always been raw and guerrilla in moving my visual image work, so its a joy to learn new tricks continuously - reminds how being open, supportive of new ideas, cultivating and challenging visions makes a difference in our shared local creative ecosystems.
Thank you @photovogue @alessiaglaviano
Grateful to be part of this collective chorus of voices.
Thank you @nationalartgallerymy for assisting in providing the means for the exchange to happen

I onboarded my first intern @8i8.c0m, who reached out from Pattani, Thailand last year, this very cute petite girl reminded me a lot about my earlier days of navigating the world, no one told me about returning to an earlier self mirrored through the presence of another woman at the beginning of her own journey.
sebenarnya, quite nervous about the responsibility, but there was also the realisation how somehow, Iโve grown be more relational within my intimate process.
for her last task, I decided nisrin to have her first exhibition, โReworkedโ under temu international womenโs day (this wasnโt planned btw - but seemed to present to be the best time, for an artwork of us working in collaboration.
The piece reworks an early conceptual image and collage of myself in a fetal resting figure sheltered within a durian form beneath a moon. I created that image at a time when I was
younger and more uncertain, often searching for spaces of emotional and creative safety, a place of lindungan.
So it seemed poetic to circle back around and present how the things you seek you become.

Circling back to the Visual poetry film
โKobis Merahโ in 2019
The confusing cycle that entails female puberty, through the vivid redโs silent coming of age. The short presents the experience and the inner secretive world for adolescent girls in Malaysia during highschool. The piece emulates the awkward, confusing and at times frustrating process navigating puberty, conveyed through the reddening of a cabbage that comes to resemble a rose.
Kobis Merah was directed to start the conversation on body and menstruation, with much of the topic on the female body muted in conservative countries. The taboo and the absence of sex education in schools and at home, leaves young girls clueless, unequipped with the knowledge on their body and changes other than the biological comprehension on menstruation and pregnancy, but none covering on health related to the functions of their sexual organs and normal hormonal processes. This shapes coming generations to feel ashamed to talk of topics related to their body viewing it as sensual rather than a matter of health, leaving them vulnerable to potential complications and the undetected changes or developments in the lifetime of their health.
Showed in @gudskul Jakarta & @kersanartfoundation Yogyakarta
Directed/Creative direction by Dhan Illiani Yusof

Violence is ordinary
Its bred, nurtured, normalised, cultivated, even cared for.
And no, I donโt mean the boys.
I mean a culture,
rife with collective complicity.
Why do we pretend to be in shock
at the rise in femicide, assault, and rape
of young women and girls?
Have you not heard your sister say,
itโs almost a rite of passage for women.
Your aunt say,
we all go through it.
Your mother say,
itโs part of being a woman.
A nationโs nawaitu
missed its nyawa itu.
our ordinary is violence here.

2/6 of my graduateโs collection from 2018

in 2018 I made an ode to my late motherโs memory ( one of many ) of the little things she taught me growing up,
on sewing, pressing flowers within Atlas and encyclopedia books, lessons on gardening and its life cycles and its gift of memberi,
so naturally I pressed a number of malaysian grown flowers and encased them in between the thinnest layers of silk fabric and sewn the edges into place, completed by a branch from one of my favourite evening walks by the taman.
A kind of autopsy of her bones, the beribu- (ibu) that i feel is around me in anything green, reminiscent of her green nature and fingers
As pressed flowers lose their vibrancy - the colour faded, yet the fragility and presence remained. A soft monument to time, memory, deep grief and what is passed down through fabric, care, and decay. Echoing as well the pain of seeing her hide her cancer in the last few months.
itโs been 7 years since i created this piece and yet this work still hangs over adjacent to my bed has lasted longer than what I expected. Fragility frozen in its own time.
It was named different before in a show, but changed it later to
โTinggal Beribuโ - on whats left yet stays, whats given yet taken and what is a thousand mothers experienced within them
