Melawan Nafas

Melawan Nafas is a performance piece by Andita Purnama Sari (Indonesia) and Dhan Illiani Yusof (Malaysia)

Reflecting how overwhelming the past year and this year have been on ourselves, our country, and on the state of the world, trying to stay afloat while drowning

Beginning with the purpose of standing in solidarity with Myanmar, between two art sisters from their respective sister cities, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, artists Dhan Illiani Yusof and Andita Purnama Sari Putri @anditapurnamasari collaborated on this joint performance project.

Andita, in her long-standing performance Clouds Number 11, tells a story about the conflict, dignity and identity of a modern woman within their constrained standards in Indonesian society, while preserving their ethnic traditions and values. The symbols of womanhood and a woman’s existential identity are presented through Andita’s embodiment of a primordial existential female figure.

Dhan Iliani's response contrasts Andita, a reverse of the same meaning, to consume to regurgitate, the struggle and self-sacrifice of attempting to give and challenge our capacity. The repetition of the act represents humans' resilience and contumacy in the continued act of giving and taking too much to the point of excess and overwhelm in the name of ‘the greater good’.

Together, the joint art piece speaks of the peaks and troughs of the human condition in self-sacrifice and preservation of dignity and identity.
